The University of Northern Colorado Information Technology department has purchased student subscriptions to the leading antivirus client in the industry. We strongly recommend installing our customized client for your computer's protection in the Residence Halls. The customized client pre-configures Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition to be managed by the UNC Information Technology staff. Install this client by browsing to http//resnet.unco.edu/webinstall/ (available to on campus residents only). Off-campus students may download the Symantec AntiVirus client via URSA
The UNC Information Technology staff strongly recommends the use of a personal firewall to protect your computer.
Spyware can significantly affect your PC's performance. The UNC IT staff recommends using utilities that detect and remove spyware. Recommended utilities include: Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition and Spybot - Search & Destroy courtesy of http://www.download.com.
Different Internet Explorer plug-ins can also negatively affect the performance of your workstation. UNC IT staff recommends going to your Control Panel and Add/ Remove Programs to remove different software that is not needed.
Multiple AV clients will take up too much of your computer's resources. We recommend solely using the Symantec AntiVirus client that UNC provides.
The residence hall network has wired connectivity to ensure better bandwidth, reliability, and security. Unauthorized wireless access points can adversely affect the performance, reliability, and security of ResNet subscribers and is therefore not tolerated within the residence hall network. Wireless is a convenient extension of the network available in many campus buildings such as the University Center, Mckee Hall, Kepner Hall and Michener Library.
